It is already the third fatal accident during forestry work in Upper Austria in February: A 67-year-old local man had a fatal accident on Tuesday morning while working in a forest in the municipality of Niederthalheim (Vöcklabruck district). The man was driving a crawler excavator on a steep embankment when the heavy vehicle suddenly began to slide due to the steep gradient. The excavator overturned and ended up on the roof.

The 67-year-old was trapped in the vehicle. Only the emergency services from the Atzbach, Niederthalheim, Penetzdorf and Schwanenstadt fire departments were able to free him from the excavator. The man was unresponsive during the rescue efforts. Any help came too late for him: the emergency doctor could only determine that he was dead, the police said on Tuesday evening.

Just the previous week, two fatal forestry accidents occurred in Upper Austria within two days: On Tuesday, a 75-year-old died in Rainbach (Freistadt district) while working in the forest, and the next day a 46-year-old had a fatal accident in the municipality of Innerschwand at Mondsee.
