The United Kingdom began its offensive against the Ómicron with several problems

The Johnson executive made it a goal to have offered a third dose to all adults in the country by Dec. 31.

These involve almost a million daily injections, for which more vaccination centers were opened, for more hours a day and with the help of the army.

However, the government website that allows you to make an appointment to be vaccinated collapsed Sunday night, after a speech to the nation by Johnson, and on Monday he was still in trouble.

In the same service, it was also reported that the antigen tests that the English public health distributes free of charge and that those who are close contact of an infected with Ómicron must now do daily.

Of 66 million inhabitants, the United Kingdom, which with more than 146,000 deaths is one of the countries in Europe most affected by the pandemic, had already decreed last week precautionary measures such as the use of masks in almost all places closed and teleworking, which came into effect this Monday.

However, early in the morning the traffic was intense in office areas such as the City of London, an AFP journalist confirmed, and many groups were circulating crowded, suggesting that the measure was not yet applied in a general way.

Starting this week, too Health passports will be required in crowded places such as nightclubs and soccer stadiums.

These measures have angered some MPs from Johnson’s Conservative Party, who on Tuesday threaten a major rebellion when Parliament votes on the new measures, which, however, are guaranteed approval thanks to the support of the opposition Labor Party.

It would be a new severe setback for the prime minister, greatly weakened by a series of scandals related to parties held in Downing Street in December 2020, when they were banned by the pandemic and the British were deprived of Christmas family gatherings.

The Omicron variant is “spreading at an extraordinary rate, which we have never seen before,” UK Health Minister Sajid Javid told Sky News channel on Monday, specifying that the number of cases doubles every two or three days.

“Our strategy has been to buy time to evaluate it and build our defenses” to prevent hospitals from being overwhelmed, he explained.

Due to this rapid increase in infections, the alert level for Covid-19 was raised on Sunday from three to four, the second highest on a scale of five, indicating that “transmission is high” and pressure on “significant or growing” health.

Some 15 days after its appearance in the country, 3,137 cases of Omicron have already been reported in the UK, but the actual number is believed to be much higher and the government expects it to become the dominant variant within days.

According to Javid, it already accounts for 40% of infections in London.
