Black Wings sports director Philipp Lukas and his captain Brian Lebler have one thing in common: they are fathers of two and therefore passionately support the “Sport & Fun with the Stars” campaign. Every year around 1,000 children from Linz kindergartens can get a taste of various sports. And not just anywhere, but at the city’s top clubs, such as the Black Wings, where they can train together with the professionals. “You can see on the ice how quickly you can motivate children and how quickly they learn,” says Lukas, “maybe the next Brian Lebler will emerge at some point.”
Wide range of sports for children
The campaign has been around since 2018 and the Black Wings have been there from the beginning. “It’s always great to see how committed the superstars are,” says sports officer, Vice Mayor Karin Hörzing (SP). In addition to ice hockey, the children can try out football, handball, volleyball or swimming, among other things, with the best teams in the city: LASK, Blau-Weiß, HC Linz AG, Steelvolleys and ASV Linz are partners today. Children were also able to get up close and personal with the tennis stars at the Upper Austria Ladies Linz in January. Since last year there has also been a cooperation with the ASKÖ Linz dance club “Urban Dance Club” and thus also an attractive offer during the summer months. On August 7, 2023, the dancers were guests at the Dauphinestrasse kindergarten.

This year the project will be further expanded with the “Champions Cup” in the summer. 400 children can take part on three consecutive days and try out various sports disciplines at the Kleinmünchen sports middle school. Each child receives a medal, and the best ones receive a trophy. Sports and movement sequences are trained at a total of eleven movement stations, such as running, jumping, throwing and classic ball sports such as football. In the weeks before the cup, a sports and exercise coach comes to the after-school care centers and kindergartens to prepare the children as best as possible for the competitions. But what really counts is the Olympic motto: Being there is everything!
