“We have arrested their relatives and other senior officials, and they provide us with much intelligence information”Hagari continued. From the FDI they hope that the publication of the video increase pressure on Hamasin the context of the negotiations that are taking place in Cairo 130 days after the armed conflict began.
Since the ground response began, the Israeli armed forces captured different recordings of Sinwar inside different tunnels built by Hamas. Hagari assured that all the material is part of a follow-up mission “It will only end when we have captured him (Yahya) dead or alive.”
The Israeli official confirmed that, thanks to the tracking operation, the military forces were able to find the “complex where other senior officials stay“where” they have good conditions with food and a lot of cash“.”When the war is happening above them. They have good conditions with food and also a lot of cash”. In addition, Hagarí added that they will soon broadcast another video in which they will see “how high-ranking officials live.”
Sinwar was born in 1962 in a Khan Yopunis refugee camp, south of Gaza. During the Arab-Israeli war, his family was displaced from Al-Majdal, a Palestinian village located in present-day Askhelo.
The Hamas leader joined the organization in the late 1980s and is one of those responsible for the creation of the Majd, Hamas’ internal intelligence apparatus. In 1988 Sinwar was arrested for participating in the murder of two Israeli soldiers and four Palestinian suspects to collaborate with Israel.

After more than 20 years in prison, Sinwar was released in 2011 as part of the agreement by which they exchanged more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners by Gilad Shalita IDF soldier that had been captured and held in Gaza for 5 years. Sinwar later stated that he spent those years “studying his enemy, even learning to speak Hebrew“.
Appointed as one of the main foreign policy officials of Hamas, Sinwar managed to establish dialogue with Egyptian leaders who were previously suspicious of the group’s support for political Islam, in addition to obtaining military financing from Iran.
In 2017, he was elected to the Politburohe main decision-making body of Hamas, as political leader of the Hamas branch in Gaza. Despite being seen as the main leader of the organization due to his constant appearances in public, Sinwar belongs to a small table made up of different Hamas leaders, which functions as a decentralized organization with various centers of power.
Sinwar is considered a vital decider and was one of the main points of contact inside Gaza during negotiations on the return of more than 240 hostages taken in the enclave by Hamas in the October 7 attacks. Gershon Baskinan Israeli peace activist, assured that there are two key people in the negotiations taking place between both parties: “one is Yahya Sinwar on the Hamas side, and the other is Benjamin Netanyahu on the Israeli side.”
