“Someone is waiting for you! Arrive safely” is emblazoned in large letters on an overhead display along the A1 – these and other nice messages, some with a red heart, are sweetening the journeys of many road users on Austria’s motorways these days. It is a new communication campaign from Asfinag that started this week.
“Without pointing fingers”
According to those responsible, the aim is to bring road safety issues to the attention of drivers in a friendly way and sometimes with a wink. “Our text advertisements on the motorways become likeable ambassadors, but without any pointing fingers,” says Petra Mödlhammer, head of the Asfinag communications department.

The concept seems to be well received by drivers. “Thank you for this lovely idea”, “Such a nice message”, “That put a smile on my face today” and “I would be happy to receive messages like this more often” are just a few of the numerous positive reactions on the Asfinag Facebook -Page.
More sayings planned
The Valentine’s Day messages, which are particularly aimed at driving carefully and choosing a smart speed, are just the beginning, reveals Mödlhammer. Later, other classic “problem issues” such as distraction, insufficient distance, fatigue and vehicle condition will bring the idea of safety into focus using positive or rhyming messages.

The text displays, which appear on overhead indicators or on the side of the road, are programmed to give priority to important current information. “Reports about accidents, traffic jams, closures or wrong-way driver warnings are clearly in the foreground,” says Mödlhammer.
