Punta del Este closed a good long weekend of Carnival despite the fact that the weather did not match the expectations of tourists, workers and businessmen in the sector. However, and together with the high numbers of visitors from both Uruguay As in other countries, the low spending raises an alert in the sector.

“As we anticipated and were announcing, it was a week full of people, about 90% of the owners came and there were a lot of people,” he explained. Javier Sena, president of the Real Estate Chamber of Punta del Este, in dialogue with VTV Noticias. “It was a weekend when many Uruguayans and many people from abroad came to rent, to the hotels; the restaurants are full, too,” he added, giving an account of the good performance that the tourist date had in the main resort of the east.

In that sense, Sena announced that “surely, this year the weekends will be full of people, and that generates the movement that we all need here.”

However, and despite what is emerging as a very good number of visitors – with a movement greater than usual for February and Carnival, as explained by the president of the Real Estate Chamber – the concern was the low expense that was given. “Many Argentine people came, people who usually come at this time and people who had been in December and January,” he considered, but clarified that “the only problem we are having is expenses.”

“The expense is lower because the Argentine spends less because of exchange difference, because when you come here you notice the difference,” Sena explained. “We hope that the Argentina recover quickly and the expense too, which is what is important, because with this greater expense we will have a better performance for the businessman and for those who work,” he said.

Outlook for the second fortnight

For its part, Sena announced that the second fortnight February It is expected to be similar to last year. In that sense, she said she has “the same expectations but with something important: high weekends.”

“It has been a good season and that rhythm continues to this day, because people are encouraged, more people are coming,” considered the president of the Real Estate Chamber of Punta del Este. “We hope that during these 15 days of February there will be good weather so that everything can be completed,” he added.

Likewise, he assured that “we are in a auspicious season and we are convinced that the following seasons are going to be better because Argentina is going to improve.” He also noted that “quite a few sales are expected for the winter”, a positive factor for the tourism sector that is still recovering from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and the exchange rate difference with the neighboring country.
