The first trees are already blooming this year. For some allergy sufferers, this triggers symptoms such as a runny nose, frequent sneezing and watery eyes. “Pollen allergies are more likely to occur in people who live in the city,” says Michaela Ranta from the allergy clinic at the Feldkirch State Hospital and explains why this is the case: “In cities, the intensive traffic pollution pollutes the air. The pollen settles on the small dirt particles , which makes allergy sufferers react more strongly.” In rural areas, where the air is cleaner, the pollen would find fewer dirt particles to dock on.
Because of the high temperatures in the past few weeks, according to Ranta, allergy sufferers across Austria are already suffering from pollen pollution. The expert advises those affected to treat hay fever symptoms to prevent allergic asthma.
