The number of measles cases is increasing throughout Austria. Although there are currently no suspected cases or confirmed illnesses in the Freistadt district, the health authority is preparing and, above all, increasing the number of measles vaccine doses in stock in the district administration’s medical service.
This means that the district administration is well prepared if a case of measles occurs, says medical officer Carina Hofer: “There is good cooperation with our medical profession, which makes the first diagnosis in suspected cases.” There is also enough staff available for contact person management so that the affected people are well informed about the further course of the disease and, if their immune status is not sufficient, can also be separated as quickly as possible by means of a notification in order to contain the further spread of the highly contagious measles as quickly as possible.
“The vaccination offers the best protection against measles,” recommends district governor Andrea Wildberger to take a look at your own immune status. After surviving a measles infection, there is lifelong immunity. The measles vaccination is included in the Austrian vaccination plan. It is available free of charge and is carried out from the age of ten months.
The complication rate for measles is 20 percent. The most common are middle ear infections or pneumonia. Combined inflammation of the brain and spinal cord is particularly feared. It occurs in one per thousand of cases and can cause permanent damage.
