Where is it better to learn for practice than where the practice will also take place later in your professional life? The Moot Court makes use of this principle, in which a court hearing is simulated. Prospective lawyers are offered the chance to swap the lecture hall for the courtroom.
“These are experiences that you can’t have otherwise”said Magdalena Hartl-Bachinger after the latest edition. She was one of twelve students who learned civil law for professional life at the final of the Moot Court in the jury room of the Linz Regional Court.
In teams of three (divided into plaintiffs and defendants), the prospective lawyers were supervised by lawyers from renowned Linz law firms and had to deal with an eviction lawsuit or a claim for damages due to defective roof panels.
The participants were required to write briefs, carried out research work and were also able to prepare themselves on the “Courtroom stage” present. An expert jury with Senate President Sabine Gosch-Plöckinger (Linz Higher Regional Court), Univ.-Prof. Silvia Dullinger (JKU) and lawyer Walter Müller had to convince the teams of their version of events at the end of the mock trial.
“Personally, I was particularly able to gain the experience of giving lectures, because you have to speak in front of a lot of people and surpass yourself”said Julia Buchegger. She received the title of “Best speaker”.
The Moot Court was organized by ELSA Linz, a faculty group of the European Law Students Association, a Europe-wide network of law and business law students, and the Institute for Civil Law at the JKU Linz. “Combining theory and practice through events such as the Moot Court is a very important aspect of training at the JKU”said the scientific director of the Institute for Civil Law, Univ.-Prof. Martina Schickmair. Getting a taste of practical experience, making contacts and swapping the lecture hall for the courtroom are important experiences for the future.
Aside from the Moot Courts, ELSA Linz also offers other events and events in which the social aspect is taken care of in addition to the professional one.
