In the previous year there were 19,939 naturalizations in Austria, almost 60 percent have their place of residence in Austria. This means in turn: Austrian citizenship was granted to 8,041 people living abroad in 2023.

Overall, the number of naturalizations fell by 3.2 percent compared to 2022. “The decline is primarily due to the fact that the naturalization of Nazi victims and their descendants fell to 7,975,” says Tobias Thomas, Director General of Statistics Austria. 98.8 percent of them live abroad. However, the naturalization of people residing in Austria increased by 9.2 percent; according to Statistics Austria, there were 11,898 people. Although this is the highest value since the last major legal tightening in 2006, the proportion of naturalizations relative to the number of foreigners remains constant at 0.7 percent – one of the lowest rates in Europe.

1,808 of the 11,898 people are registered in Upper Austria, which corresponds to an increase of 36.1 percent compared to 2022. Naturalizations also increased in six other federal states, with declines only recorded in Vienna (minus 12.9 percent to 3,899) and Carinthia (minus 21.4 percent to 434). A fifth of the 11,898 “new citizens” were born in Austria, a third were under 18 years old. Of the naturalized people living in Austria, 4,597 people come from Syria, Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Afghanistan.
