For both sides, this contract is the visible sign of a step towards the future: The “number 1” of the electric buses produced by Steyr Automotive will soon be on the streets of Steyr. Mayor Markus Vogl, together with Stadtbetriebe boss Peter Hochgatterer and the chairman of the supervisory board of Steyr Automotive, Siegfried Wolf, signed a letter of intent to purchase the first eCITY.6.
The purchase price is still not disclosed, but according to Vogl it is “appropriate”. The six-meter-long, barrier-free, low-floor vehicle, which is designed for a maximum of 22 passengers, can be seen in real operation in the second or third quarter of 2022 at the earliest. For the time being, the exact equipment requirements will be defined by mid-February.
“For the city, switching to electromobility in public transport is a further step towards a sustainable energy policy,” says Vogl. Of course, the best cost-benefit ratio with top technology is an essential criterion for procurement. It is “a special pleasure to have the opportunity to purchase a product that meets all these requirements and also comes from the company’s own production facilities”.
The plan is to use the new eCITY.6 primarily on the edge lines such as the edge of the forest or Schlüsselhofsiedlung, as well as in sensitive residential areas such as in Steyrdorf.
Buses up to 18 meters in length
At Steyr Automotive, electric buses with a length of six to 18 meters are to be produced in the future. It is based on models that have been tried and tested in Russia for years. The buses are manufactured in a modular design that meets the new requirements of the European market for “zero emissions”. Small series production is scheduled to start in Steyr at the end of next year.
Siegfried Wolf: “I am very pleased that we, as an Austrian player, will soon be able to supply the domestic and European market with competitive vehicles for a modern infrastructure.”
