Uruguay wants to reach the Moon

The Uruguayan Foreign Minister, Omar Paganini, signed the Artemis Accords that establish the principles of space exploration and seek to maintain a human presence in the Moon, reported the State Department.

“The United States welcomes Uruguay as a valued partner in advancing our shared goals for peace, prosperity and scientific discovery in space,” he says in a statement.

Uruguay is part of the Alliance for Economic Prosperity in the Americas (APEP), promoted by Washington to promote development and in some way counteract Chinese influence in the region.

“Our growing high-tech trade ties and our commitment to democracy are the foundations of our strong relationship,” the State Department said after holding the Second Annual Bilateral Interministerial Dialogue.

During his trip to Washington, the Uruguayan Foreign Minister held several meetings, one of them with the US Undersecretary of State, Kurt Campbell.

The relationship between Uruguay and Venezuela has been strained in recent days with a call for consultations from its ambassador in Caracas because it is considered “unviable” to hold free elections.

This Thursday, Uruguay joined its voice with Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Paraguay to express in a statement “its deep concern about the arbitrary detention of the (Venezuelan) human rights activist Rocío San Miguel” and the suspension of the activities of a UN office in Venezuela.
