On Thursday, the Greens made another attempt in the state parliament committee for a “real vacancy tax” and this time submitted an application for their own vacancy tax law.
This is needed in addition to the existing leisure flat rate, they say. This is the only way to ensure a clear legal separation between leisure residences and real vacant properties. “Apartment prices are going through the roof and valuable land is being sealed off for new apartments. At the same time, we have tens of thousands of apartments that are empty,” says Ines Vukajlovic, housing spokeswoman for the Green Party: “That’s total nonsense. We can only create an incentive through our own vacancy levy, as is also required by the municipal association, the state audit office, and experts.” This levy “should not be added somewhere, added or peppered with exceptions”. “But we want our own effective law.” However, the application was rejected by VP, FP, MFG and Neos. Vukajlovic speaks of the black-blue coalition’s “ignorance and refusal to find solutions”.
VP club chairman Christian Dörfel replies: “A vacancy tax would have to be significantly higher than in Tyrol or Salzburg in order to really achieve a steering effect. However, the state competence for this is lacking.”
