During the voting, residents of the French city of Rouen expressed their opinion on the need to return the statue of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte to the Town Hall Square. This was announced on December 13 by the France-3 TV channel.
4080 people (out of 110 thousand inhabitants) took part in the voting, 68% of them expressed their support for the installation of the equestrian statue after the completion of its restoration.
The city hall of Rouen noted that the number of voters was the highest in the modern history of the city.
Since 1865, an equestrian statue of Napoleon has stood in the center of the Town Hall Square. On July 2, 2020, it was removed from the pedestal and sent for restoration. The cause was a crack in one of the horse’s legs.
The inscription on the monument says that the bronze for the sculpture was cast from captured cannons captured at the Battle of Austerlitz.
In September, one of Napoleon Bonaparte’s three-cornered hats became the main lot at Sotheby’s online auction. Experts believed that its cost would not exceed € 500-700 thousand. However, the lot was sold for a record € 1.22 million. The buyer of the rarity remained unknown.
