For several years, the Rotary Club of Ried has been supporting Roma children in a former industrial region in southern Serbia, who have a particularly difficult time on the fringes of a society that is largely destitute.
Now the ladies of the Soroptimist Club Ried also contributed to this help with a donation of 2,000 euros. This made it possible to purchase hygiene products for around 30 students and to finance school meals and school transport. “Especially for girls from Roma families, which often still have patriarchal structures, it is not a given that they can attend school. That is why support is particularly necessary here,” says Soroptimist President Regina Barth. In addition, the Rotarians donated another 1,000 euros to enable boys and girls to have physical education lessons at a local primary school. “Education creates future prospects, and school sports can also contribute to this,” says Rotary Club President Johann Wallner. This is shown by the example of a former student from Aleksinac who pursued a career as a professional footballer.
The RC Ried also supports Roma children in Aleksinac as part of the multi-year aid project “Education instead of begging” coordinated by Friedrich Renner, most recently by purchasing laptops and financing IT and English teachers.
