“Something is certainly possible for us against Waldviertel,” said UVC Ried chairman Roman Lutz in an OÖN interview before the first game of the quarter-final series on Saturday evening. The Rieders finished the regular round in sixth place and therefore have to compete against the third team from Lower Austria.
The Rieders laid the key to their important home win in the first set. In a real thriller, UVC Ried retained the upper hand with 34:32. The second set went to the guests from Zwettl 25:22. Then the home team, driven by the loud fans in the Volleydome, took command again and won sets three and four with 25:15 and 25:21.
Former head coach Dominik Kefer as assistant coach
By the way, the Rieders are making an exciting and surprising comeback. Dominik Kefer, the former coach, has been on the bench as Manuel Leitgeb’s assistant for around two weeks. Kefer was coach of UVC Ried for five seasons. After the 2022/2023 season, the collaboration between the club and Kefer was ended for private and professional reasons. Now Kefer, who led the club to several successes, is helping again in the hot phase of the season.
The second leg will take place on March 2nd in Zwettl. With a win, the Waldviertel team would force a third and decisive game in this quarter-final series. If the Rieders win, they will be in the Bundesliga semi-finals.
