It’s a question that many smartphone buyers have probably asked themselves: Does it have to be the latest – and usually most expensive – model from a manufacturer? Or does an older model also work? One that, as in the case of our comparison test, has been around for two and a half years, has been completely overhauled and is a few hundred euros cheaper.
Specifically, it’s about an iPhone 13 Pro Max, which was reprocessed by the Viennese company Refurbed. Exactly such devices are currently offered in the online shop from 570 euros. In comparison, a new iPhone 15 Pro Max from Apple is currently available from 1200 euros. The OÖN tried out how the refurbished iPhone stacks up against the current top model.
From a purely external point of view, the differences are manageable: the display size (6.7 inches) is the same, the weight difference is just 17 grams, and the material of the housing has been changed from stainless steel to titanium. In recent years, smartphone manufacturers have placed great emphasis on the brightness of their screens. And there has actually been a decent improvement in the maximum brightness in a direct comparison.
The main innovations are the USB-C port of the iPhone 15 and the Dynamic Island, which has replaced the notch since the 14 generation and gives the iPhone a more modern look. This is not only noticeable visually, the Dynamic Island also offers some additional functions. The feature has already been well integrated, especially when it comes to music playback. Notifications also appear in the notch at the top of the screen.
One could expect a significant difference in the processor. However, no serious differences were noticed in the test during everyday use. The iPhone 13 can even cope well with image editing or computationally intensive games.
There are high-level changes to the camera. The main camera now has a resolution of 48 megapixels, compared to 12 megapixels on the iPhone 13 Pro Max. As a result, the iPhone 15 Pro Max takes slightly better photos, but the 13 model doesn’t have to hide either.
The batteries of the respective devices have a similar capacity, although that of the iPhone 15 Pro Max is a little higher. In a direct comparison, however, you hardly notice any difference.
iPhone 13 has aged well
Regardless of whether it’s the camera, display or battery: the bottom line is that the iPhone 13 Pro Max has aged well. Of course, the latest generation has its technical advantages here and there, but these are usually not too serious. So if you want to focus on the differences, you will of course find them. If you can live with one or two compromises, you can still drive very well with the older model – and save a lot of money in the process.
However, one point should still be considered, namely the supply of software updates. Anyone who buys an iPhone 13 (Pro or Pro Max) today can of course still easily update to the latest iOS. And since Apple usually provides iPhones with updates for at least six years, it should stay that way for at least four more years. With an iPhone 15 (Pro or Pro Max), this period is extended – almost naturally – by two years. Before purchasing, you should also consider how long the device will last after purchase.
