A team of scientists with Austrian participation has now found out why clot formation in organs after an infection is associated with such a high risk: The thrombi in Covid-19 are particularly dense and stable over a long period of time. Blood coagulation factor XII / XIIa is likely to be responsible for this.
“A coronavirus infection can be fatal not only because of severe pneumonia with acute lung failure. The disease is also to a large extent associated with increased clot formation and the associated thromboembolic complications, which often ends in the death of the patient. This is expressed among other things through the development of a pulmonary embolism, a stroke or a heart attack up to multi-organ failure in connection with a Covid-19 disease “, wrote the University of Giessen in Germany. In any case, the connection between SARS-CoV2 infections and thromboses and embolisms is significant, according to the scientists. From a medical point of view, an infection with the coronavirus not only leads to generalized inflammation in the body, but also to an overreaction of other defense mechanisms, including the blood coagulation system.
The team recommends that medical societies include factor XII / XIIa as a causative factor for thrombosis in their guidelines for thrombosis therapy in corona patients. Since it is possible to inhibit factor XIIa with known specific inhibitors, an effective antithrombotic therapy could be carried out in corona patients.
