The United States seeks to annul UN order for Israel to cease fire in Gaza

In its latest draft, the text “demands an immediate humanitarian ceasefire that must be respected by all parties”reported the AFP news agency.

Furthermore, the draft resolution “rejects the forced displacement of the Palestinian civilian population”, calls for an end to this “violation of international law” and demands the release of all hostages.

Algeria requested a vote by the Security Council – which has 15 members – on the new text on Tuesday, but Washington has signaled that it will use its veto power to nullify the measure.

Like previous texts questioned by Israel and the United States, the new proposal does not condemn the unprecedented attack by the Islamist group Hamas against Israel on October 7, which caused the death of some 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and unleashed the offensive in Loop.

Israel’s retaliation in Gaza, meanwhile, has caused at least 28,858 deathsthe vast majority of civilians, according to the Ministry of Health of that Palestinian territory governed by Hamas.

The president of United States, Joe Bidenis working with the rulers of Israel, Egypt and Qatar on a hostage deal that proposes an “extended pause in fighting,” US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said in a statement.

“The resolution presented in the Security Council, by contrast, would not achieve these results and, in fact, could work against them”stated the diplomat.

“The United States does not support taking action on this draft resolution,” he added. “If it is put to a vote as written, it will not be approved,” he explained. At the beginning of the month, the ambassador warned that the Algerian initiative could “derail” negotiations for a truce.

In October and again in December, The United States vetoed draft resolutions calling for a ceasefiredespite pressure from the international community in the face of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The Council, very divided for years on the Israeli-Palestinian issuehas only been able to adopt two essentially humanitarian texts on this topic since October 7.

The last one approved at the end of December – with the abstention of USA– called for the “large-scale” sending of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian territory.
