A year ago, on December 10th, 2020, it was decided in the “Pact for Linz” to invest 65 million euros in the fight against the consequences of the pandemic. Specifically, the economic impact should be cushioned.
“45.4 million euros have already been invested within the framework of the pact,” says SP Mayor Klaus Luger, who adds that 26 million euros can be requested from the federal government, of which 23 million euros have already been collected. “But we will also use the rest to the full and get the remaining three million,” said Luger.
Most of it was invested in the children: 24 million euros went to school buildings, 5.3 million euros to the expansion of childcare facilities, 4.2 million euros for better furnishing of kindergartens, crèches and schools.
1.3 million euros was spent on the modernization of senior centers, with a further 3.7 million euros planned for the coming year, for example for the renovation of the senior centers Neue Heimat and Spallerhof.
“In addition, we spent 14 million euros on sustainable infrastructure, for example for the movement park on the Weikerlsee,” adds SP City Vice President Karin Hörzing, while VP City Councilor Doris Lang-Mayerhofer emphasizes that 2.7 million euros (out of five Million euros). One million euros have been invested in security (such as optimizing street lighting), knows FP City Councilor for Security Michael Raml. And Eva Schobesberger (Greens) added that 1.3 million euros were spent on climate protection measures, 3.7 million euros to follow.
The labor market is also benefiting from the investments: The number of unemployed (also thanks to the companies in Linz) is currently 7,400, five percent less than at the end of 2019.
