“We remain undefeated against the series champions,” shouted Blau-Weiß Linz stadium spokesman Alexander Bravo into his stadium microphone after the heroic 1-1 draw against series champions Salzburg in the Bundesliga. Whereupon the 5,500 fans who had once again turned the sold-out Hofmann-Personal Stadium into a madhouse chanted “You are our points provider”.

Who would have thought? The newly promoted team also took a significant toll on the Bulls in the second duel of the season and is something like the league dominator’s feared opponent: the Linzers have not lost a duel since the founding of the Blau-Weiß (once in the cup, two in the league). “To score four points against the series champions as a newcomer – not everyone can claim that,” cheered BW goalie Nicolas Schmid.

The 26-year-old was the center of attention after just six seconds: when the guests took the lead in a flash and Petar Ratkov scored a new record goal in the Bundesliga. “We play this kick-off every game, unfortunately this time it went wrong.” BW defense chief Manuel Maranda was also involved: “Normally the ball flies over me. Maybe we took a little too much time.” Bitter: The goal actually shouldn’t have counted (see Factbox). Maranda: “If he ran away too soon, it’s a mean thing that you can’t see it and not be allowed to look at it afterwards.”

This also annoyed BW coach Gerald Scheiblehner, who saw his first yellow card in the upper house for it: “I have said several times that I find it strange that a goal like that counts. When none of the four referees sees what we see If you see the dugout, then it’s a big mistake.” He was all the more proud of how his team overcame the early deficit: “That speaks for the spirit of the team, I was thrilled.” After the final whistle, he also found humorous words for the unsuccessful kick-off variation: “If you score a goal after six seconds, you still have enough time to equalize.”

Standard version worked
His team only needed ten minutes: Maranda scored 1-1 after a well-rehearsed free kick variation. After that, the blue and whites left their hearts on the pitch. Scheiblehner: “It was a very special evening for Blue and White. For me, the draw counts just as much as the win in Salzburg, especially since they were looking for revenge.” Salzburg coach Gerhard Struber also paid tribute to the blue-whites: “It was the difficult game that was expected, the blue-whites sold themselves dearly in a cool stadium. We didn’t succeed enough in making the blue wall crumble.”
