Anton Bruckner in the eyes of 20 artists

Anyone who is currently walking through the gallery in the municipal office (GIGA) in Ansfelden will not be able to pass Bruckner. It’s logical, you might say, that this year, on the 200th birthday of the composer and musician, the “Bruckner Year” has been proclaimed. Ansfelden’s most famous son was born there on September 4, 1824. For curator Karin Hujber, the plan was set a year ago. “I wanted to get good artists to think about Anton Bruckner and immortalize them in pictures.”

Brucknerhaus at night

In the end there were 23 pictures by 20 artists, characterized by different approaches, which found space in the exhibition “Bruckner and his life”. “Of course there are many minds there, but not only,” says Hujber during the tour with the OÖN. Right at the entrance, Verena Brosche painted the Brucknerhaus at night. In her picture, Ilse Hartl placed the Bruckner organ at the center of her artistic work, and Karin Durstberger dedicated herself to Bruckner’s stages in his life.

Half a floor higher you can see the characteristic face of the world-class composer from different angles. The fact that abstract and realistic images are mixed here was a wish that came true. But there were no guidelines for the artists. It is a colorful picture that revolves around Bruckner as a person. Siegfried Resl chose the composer’s famous death mask as the starting point for his artistic considerations. “He breathes out his life, but his spirit continues to float in higher spheres,” he explains.

Organ pipes from Ebensee

You can also smile one floor higher, because installations round off the exhibition here. Organ pipes play the main role. “They are original pipes from the church in Ebensee,” says Hujber, who designed the installation “Let it swing, Tony” together with her colleagues from the art association NH10, Resl and Alfred Hansl. In this case you can also attack the painted pipes and set them in motion.

The exhibition “Bruckner and his life” can be seen in Ansfelden until March 8th. Curator Hujber hopes that the works will then also be distributed in other places. After all, the Bruckner year is still long.
