Peace project canceled in Advent due to concern about radical participants

Set a visible sign for more appreciation in personal interaction as well as for solidarity with the hospital and nursing staff. That is what the initiators of the “Lantern Walk for Justice and Peace” wanted, which should have taken place next Sunday in Pregarten. The parish and parish had invited to the parade.

But nothing will come of it. Because recently the indications grew that the action could be infiltrated by radical anti-vaccination opponents and conspiracy theorists in order to create a mood for their convictions. “We have received inquiries from people who fear that they will abuse our event as a platform for ideas that we do not really want to have anything to do with,” says Martin Klötsch. The civil engineer had the idea for the lantern path around Christmas.

Against the background of increasing violence at Corona demos in Linz and other major Austrian cities, the rip cord had to be pulled. Also because the move in Pregarten was last advertised on relevant pages of the Telegram news service – in addition to calls for “media demos” and vigils in front of hospitals. “In the past few days the danger has increased that our peace march will tip completely in the wrong direction. We decided to cancel it.”

This step has become inevitable, emphasizes Pregarten’s pastor August Aichhorn: “Some have misunderstood the Laternenweg as a protest against the government. That would have been the last thing we would have wanted.”

The peace march was intended as a sign of diversity, emphasizes Martin Klösch: “I also do not agree with everything the government has done in the past few weeks. But I definitely do not want politicians and care workers to be liars and murderers when moving be insulted. ” (live)
