The town of Targu Mures in Romanian Transylvania is around 830 kilometers as the crow flies from Grieskirchen. While the center is dominated by imposing buildings from the Middle Ages, Baroque and Art Nouveau eras, the outskirts are a picture of misery. In one of the many Roma settlements that exist across the country, people struggle daily for survival. “It feels like you are in a slum somewhere in India and not in Europe,” says Katharina Mantler, managing director of ORA International.

The Andorf organization has been providing development aid in the settlement for decades. The Kröswang company from Grieskirchen is now financing a new project in the long term: a soup cookery where children, young people and seniors in need get a warm lunch. “It’s about survival,” explains Mantler.
Managing director Manfred Kröswang speaks of his company’s social responsibility: “We do not see our role exclusively in the economic sphere of our company, but also want to make a voluntary contribution to society.” The food supplier’s employees are also helping: They collected warm blankets, which were handed over to ORA at the end of January and sent to Eastern Europe.
“Want to give perspective”
Part of the project also includes homework support. “We don’t just help the population in the settlement with survival measures. With educational projects, parental care and social work, we also try to give people a perspective and help them get out of poverty,” says Mantler. The projects are carried out in collaboration with Jozsi Mucui. “He grew up in the settlement himself and founded an association to improve the situation there,” says the ORA managing director.
The support from Kröswang is particularly helpful because it is long-term and occurs at regular intervals. “We appreciate every individual donation, but with this form of financing we can plan and help in the long term – hopefully many companies will follow this good example,” says Mantler.
