The Linz Sisters of Mercy Hospital is the third hospital in the EU and the first in Austria to recently use the new surgical assistance system “Velys” introduced. With robot support, planning for knee operations can be implemented even more accurately and the prostheses can be placed with millimeter precision.
“In orthopedics, every treatment is tailored to the patient. The modern implantation technology and digital instrumentation help the surgeons to implement the planning during the operation extremely precisely”says Reinhold Ortmaier, head of the orthopedic department. The accurate positioning of the implant largely determines its function and longevity.

Many advantages for patients
The surgical robot “Velys” has, among other things, a saw, a high-frequency camera and a monitor. Sensors on the leg are used to determine directly during the operation where the implant needs to be placed in order to achieve the best possible results – such as a high range of motion of the joint. The soft tissue tension of muscles, tendons and ligaments around the knee is also measured and taken into account. The results are displayed directly to the surgeons on the screen. In contrast to previous navigation systems, no image data needs to be created using CT (computed tomography) or MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) before the operation. This reduces the radiation exposure for the patients.
There are now six locations in Europe where “Velys” operated on: after the Linz Order Hospital, also the Herz-Jesu Hospital and the Speising Orthopedic Hospital in Vienna.
