The first sightings have already been reported to the Agency for Health and Food Security (AGES). The fact that the animals survive the winter is thanks to so-called anti-frost proteins, which prevent ice crystals from forming in their bodies. This means they can withstand sub-zero temperatures well, as long as they don’t last too long. In general, climate change is beneficial for ticks – the advance of arachnids to almost all altitudes has been observed for a long time.
In Europe, ticks are the most common carriers of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE). There is a vaccination against TBE that experts strongly recommend.
