Exercise is healthy and reduces the risk of many diseases. But at what length of training does this effect occur? The answer could be provided by an American-Chinese study, for which 400,000 people were observed between 1997 and 2019. According to this, men achieve a maximum reduction in the risk of death if they exercise for 300 minutes per week. According to the results, women only needed 140 minutes to do this.
The risk of death decreases significantly
The researchers also determined to what extent the risk of death decreased through sport. Regular sporting activity in leisure time reduced this risk by an average of 15 percent for men and 24 percent for women – in each case compared to people who did not do any sport.
When men exercised very intensively for 110 minutes per week, their risk of death fell by 19 percent. Women reached this value after just 57 minutes of intensive training. Martha Gulati from the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles (US state of California) and her team hope that the study results will encourage more women to be physically active, as the time required for a positive health effect is not particularly great.
