The farmers are protesting against the Czech government’s agricultural policy. They complain about high energy prices, bureaucracy, inadequate subsidy policy and are calling for the Czech Republic to withdraw from the EU’s “Green Deal”.

Because of the protest, there were severe traffic delays in Prague. However, the residents of the greater Prague area were prepared because the protest had been announced and resorted to public transport. The two trade union federations that organized the blockade expect the protest to last until Monday afternoon. It cannot be ruled out that there could still be traffic disruptions on Tuesday, it said.
“We are fighting to ensure that the energy industry, the food industry and agricultural production remain in domestic hands. Let us not tolerate the destruction of industry and agriculture caused by the Green Deal!” demanded the organizers of the protest.
Agriculture minister booed
Agriculture Minister Marek Výborný criticized the organizers of the protest and accused them of operating with misinformation and pursuing their own political ambitions, exploiting farmers for their own purposes. In defense of the Green Deal, the minister emphasized that environmental and climate protection is essential if we want to preserve Europe.”
When Výborný tried to talk to the farmers, he was booed. “Traitor!”, “Government resignation!” and “Do you know what a cow looks like?” the demonstrators shouted.

Prime Minister Petr Fiala also condemned the protest. This has “not much to do with the fight for better conditions for farmers”. The protest was being organized “by people who, for example, do not hide their support for the Kremlin,” wrote Fiala on the X platform (formerly Twitter).
Other agricultural organizations, including the Chamber of Agriculture, have distanced themselves from the protest. They want to join the farmers’ Europe-wide protest on Thursday.
