The ambassador in Venezuela resigned and diplomatic tension grows

He Uruguayan ambassador to Venezuela, Eber Da Rosapresented his “indeclinable” resignation from the diplomatic position in the South American country alleging personal reasons, while the diplomatic tension between both countries escalates after the strong verbal exchanges between the president of Luis Lacalle Pou and the Minister of Economy, Finance and Foreign Trade and Vice President of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez.

After Lacalle Pou described the Venezuelan government as “a dictatorship that breaks your eyes,” the Venezuelan vice president assured that the Uruguayan president “has the face of a lackey” and that he is at the service of “his masters from the north.” Rodríguez’s comments were supported on social networks by himself. Venezuelan President Nicolás Madurowhich sparked several criticisms from actors throughout the political spectrum in Uruguay.

He chancellor Omar Paganinicommunicated this Monday through his X account (formerly Twitter) that in the last few hours Da Rosa sent a report on the “state of the political situation” in Venezuela after the judicial disqualification of Maria Corina Machadothe main opposition candidate, and the arrest Venezuelan activist Rocío San Miguel.

“Unfortunately, the concern of the Uruguayan government is ratified: the viability of the democratic normalization process is in question due to a series of government actions,” Paganini said of the report.

Likewise, the Uruguayan foreign minister stated that in Venezuela “There must be free and transparent elections,” but that “with persecution and banning of candidates, with imprisonment of social leaders and expulsion of international representatives, the democratic normalization that was sought with the Barbados Agreement“.

“Uruguay considers it convenient to maintain diplomatic ties with Venezuela”

After the “unwavering and immediate decision to resign from his position for personal reasons” expressed by Da Rosa was confirmed, Paganini remarked that Uruguay continues to consider “convenient and necessary to maintain diplomatic ties with Venezuela“, so “the representation to be maintained in Caracaswhile the Venezuelan political evolution is closely followed.

Da Rosa served as Uruguayan ambassador in Venezuela from January 19, 2023 to today, and presented his credentials to President Maduro on June 15, 2023. Uruguay had stopped maintaining diplomatic relations after Oscar Ramosthe ambassador during the management of the former president José Mujicawill leave office.
