Dramatic scenes took place on Monday morning in Fügen in Tyrol’s Zillertal: a car had apparently broken through the outside railing on the first floor of a parking garage and had fallen around five meters onto the forecourt of a supermarket there, where it remained on the roof. The 73-year-old driver was trapped in the car and had to be freed by the fire department. He sustained such serious injuries that he had to be taken to Schwaz Hospital by emergency helicopter. The exact course of the incident was still the subject of investigations.

“Extremely worrying”

It was a demanding operation for the Fügen Volunteer Fire Department, which was on site with 26 personnel to help with the careful rescue of the injured, as well as the cleaning and towing work. Because onlookers repeatedly hindered the emergency services at work, as can be seen from the report on the FF Fügen website. “We find it extremely worrying how naturally many people approach accident scenes and ongoing operations and immediately take photos and videos with their cell phones,” it says.

  • From the archive: When sensationalism becomes dangerous

“It is particularly cheeky to take additional videos of an accident scene where the accident victims can be seen and then use the zoom function to zoom in on the injured people and then distribute these photos en masse on social media. This is not in bad taste exceed,” said the emergency services angrily.

In Austria, onlookers who hinder rescue operations or take cell phone photos of accident victims face a fine of up to 500 euros. If the circumstances are particularly aggravating, you can even face a week’s imprisonment.
