February 20th is Love Your Pet Day in the USA. When and by whom the day was initiated is unclear. But it was probably someone who shared their life with animal companions. And it’s definitely a good reason to pay a lot of attention to your own pets.

Animal facts
- Cats are at the top of the popularity rankings. According to a representative survey from 2019 and 2020, 22 percent of Austrians owned a cat, reports Statista. At least 13 percent still keep one or more dogs. This is followed by reptiles and fish (5 percent), small animals (4 percent), birds and other domestic animals (2 percent each).

- According to Statista, 2.05 million cats, 766,000 dogs and around 508,000 small mammals – for example guinea pigs and mice – lived under the same roof with Austrians in 2022 (or even shared a bed with them).
- Pet owners tend to be female. A survey in summer 2022 showed: 34 percent of Austrians live with one or more pets, according to Statista. Although there are slightly more women. 21 percent of the men and 23 percent of the women surveyed said they kept a pet. The difference is clearer when it comes to having more pets – 14 percent of the women surveyed and 9 percent of the men said yes.

- Why do Austrians live with pets? The reasons vary – but according to Statista, love of animals was given most frequently in 2023. Around 70 percent of respondents said they treat their pets like family.
