President Luis Lacalle Pou He referred this Tuesday to the moment of diplomatic tension that his administration is experiencing with the government of Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela. “The relationship is with the people of Venezuela, not with the government (of Maduro)”, assured the President of the Republic when consulted by the press, among which was Ambit, during a tourism investment event taking place in Montevideo.
Lacalle Pou He was thus referring to the tensions of recent weeks after the Executive condemn the disqualification of Maria Corina Machado as a presidential candidate of anti-Chavismo and expressed her concern about the arbitrary detention of the human rights defender Rocío San Miguel.
The last episode of the regional controversy was the resignation of the ambassador in Venezuela, Eber Da Rosawho presented his “indeclinable” and “immediate” resignation from the diplomatic position alleging “personal reasons.”
The resignation occurred after he sent Chancellery a report on the “state of the political situation” in that country, which confirmed “the concern of the Uruguayan government: the viability of the process of democratic normalization is in question due to a series of actions by the government,” according to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Omar Paganini through his X account (formerly Twitter).
Given this scenario, and in line with what was expressed by the chancellor regarding the convenience and need to “maintain diplomatic ties with Venezuela”, President Lacalle Pou He stated that the idea is to maintain an ambassador in Caracas, so Da Rosa’s replacement will be appointed as soon as possible. “The relationship is with the people of Venezuela, not with the government,” he said, in that sense,
The president’s statements were made within the framework of the presentation of the first investment guide “Tourism Doing Business, Investing in Uruguay”, an activity in conjunction with the World Tourism Organization and the support of Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF).
The attacks of the Venezuelan vice president
Diplomatic tensions escalated considerably after the vice president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, attacked the president again Luis Lacalle Pou after the Uruguayan government questioned the political situation in Caracas and the president described the government of that country as “an eye-opening dictatorship.”
First of all, Nicolás Maduro’s second assured that Lacalle Pou “he has the face of a lackey” and that he is at the service of “his masters from the north”; comments that were supported on social networks by the Venezuelan president himself but that were criticized and repudiated by the entire local political spectrum.
More recently, Rodríguez wrote on his X account that “they went quickly to pay for his services to “Luis Lacalle Pou”, by echoing the message of Brian Nichols, American diplomat, on the progress of the relationship between both countries. “The description we made of him just a few days ago was a carbon copy,” she added, referring to the “lackey” description of USA, also adding that the president of the Republic was “promoter and sponsor of one of the most servile lackeys against Latin America”, the holder of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro.
“Those who come out to defend him will be judged by history,” the Venezuelan vice president also wrote, in what could be a veiled criticism of the former president. Jose Mujica, who also criticized the Venezuelan government and described it as “authoritarian.”
