“Following the child protection package last year with significantly harsher penalties for perpetrators, we are also intensifying our efforts to provide more child protection this year: The Federal Chancellery is doubling the funding for child protection again this year – there is now more than one million euros available for funding,” said Raab.
Specialist office for online protection
Because the measures would only be effective if there was close cooperation between all actors, the child protection summit in the Federal Chancellery was organized to listen to those who deal directly with those affected and implement new concepts – i.e. with representatives of youth – and sports organizations as well as child protection centers.
A separate child protection center to combat sexual violence in the digital world is already being developed. “In my view, we need to continue to expand the preventative measures to protect our children at the same pace as before, especially in the online area,” emphasized Plakolm. Child abuse does not only take place in the analogue world, but increasingly on social media and via messenger services. “The new saferinternet.at project against sexual violence in the digital world will become a central component in the fight against child abuse.”
Establishment of a “quality assurance body”
Among others, the Austrian Child Protection Centers and the ECPAT association will present the progress in setting up the “Quality Assurance Center for Child Protection”. The independent “Child Protection Quality Assurance Body” will be responsible for advising, awarding and recertifying child protection concepts. In the future, clubs and organizations will be able to have their child protection concepts checked and certified at this office. “This should be a quality feature, especially for parents, and a visible sign for clubs and organizations that they have dealt particularly well with child protection and prevention,” said Plakolm.
