After the operation, a message was read on the LockBit site indicating that “This site is now under control of law enforcement“, stating that the NCA had managed to take control of it. This was achieved in cooperation with the United States FBI and agencies from several countries.
Likewise, the message reported: “We can confirm that LockBit services are being interrupted due to an ongoing international police operation.” Then, Graeme Biggardirector general of the NCA, said in a press conference: “We hack hackers.”
LockBit, the dangerous hacker group dismantled in London
According to the agency, the group attacked “thousands of victims around the world” and caused losses amounting to billions of dollars. Specifically, according to the United States, LockBit received US$120 million in ransoms.
In November 2022, the United States Department of Justice called the LockBit malware the “most active and destructive variants in the world“. The group focused on critical infrastructure and large industrial groups, with ransom demands ranging between US$5.4 million and US$75.4 million.
In 2023, the group attacked the British postal operator and a Canadian children’s hospital. According to a US authorities site, the group carried out more than 1,700 attacks against victims from the United States and around the world, since it also attacked people from other countries such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, among others.
