The measure is a reaction to both the death of Navalny and the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine that has been going on for two years. The USA has already imposed extensive sanctions on Russia.
US calls for “complete transparency”
In a conference call with reporters, Kirby said the U.S. was pressing Russia for “full transparency” about how Navalny died in a penal colony. The prison administration in northern Russia announced on Friday that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s best-known opponent “felt unwell” after a walk in the prison camp and “almost immediately lost consciousness.” US President Joe Biden blamed Putin for the death.

The US has already imposed a series of sanctions related to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. “Whatever story the Russian government wants to tell the world, it is clear that President Putin and his government are responsible for Mr. Navalny’s death,” Kirby said. The US Embassy in Moscow has sought further information about Navalny’s death, “but it is difficult to reach a point where one can rely on what the Russians would say about his death.”
