To receive the ships, the tourism minister, Tabare Viera, and the president of the National Port Administration (ANP), Juan Curbelothe undersecretary and national director of Tourism, Remo Monzeglio and Roque Baudean, respectively, and the vice president of the ANP, Daniel Loureiro.


“We must highlight the good work of the ANP, which shows the management capacity to continue with the daily loading task and, in turn, adequately receive four vessels of these dimensions,” Viera highlighted.
This Monday, the cruise ships MSC Música, Azamara Quest, and Norwegian Star arrived at the port of Montevideo, from Buenos Aires, and the Seabourn Quest, whose previous port of call was New Island, in the South Atlantic. Each boat had a total of 7,000 passengers.
Promising numbers
The president of the ANP highlighted in a press conference that compared to the year before the pandemic, the 2023-2024 season will exceed the 2019 figures in arrivals by 40%. cruise ships. This, according to Curbelo, shows “sustained growth” of this type of tourism.
On the other hand, the leader assured that this causes a “spill effect“that the cruise industry generates in transportation and commerce, among other activities, in addition to income for the ANP. In that sense, he highlighted that the objective is to continue growing the number of ships that arrive to Montevideo and Punta del Esteas well as helping Antarctic cruise ships maintain the capital’s port as a base on their circuits.

Meanwhile, the minister of Tourism estimated a 10% increase in cruise ship arrivals compared to the previous season in which 187 ships docked between the country’s capital and Punta del Este and 320,000 passengers arrived.
In addition, he recalled that they are still searching for river companies to develop cruises that could include Colonia del Sacramento. For this, he remembered that the spa National Hydrography Directorate of the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works (MTOP) and the ANP are studying the possibility of incorporating a dock that allows for greater descent of passengers and crew.
