Austrian Foreign Ministry calls refusal of SP-2 unreasonable

Attempts by European politicians to question the Nord Stream 2 (SP-2) gas pipeline project are unreasonable. This statement was made by Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg on Monday, December 13.

In his opinion, SP-2 is an acceptable project. Also during a meeting of the heads of diplomatic departments of the European Union (EU) in Brussels, he said that during discussions about Russia, one should not constantly question the implementation of this project. Moreover, SP-2 helps Europe to diversify gas supplies.

Schallenberg also recalled the discussions that took place in Austria back in 2006. Even then, the country’s authorities talked about the need to diversify gas supply routes. And SP-2, according to the head of the Austrian Foreign Ministry, serves exactly this purpose, reports FAZ.

On December 13, the official representative of the German government, Steffen Hebeshtreit, said that it was necessary to wait for the legal verification of the compliance of the SP-2 with the EU energy criteria.

In turn, JV-2 operator Nord Stream 2 AG stated that it is making every effort to ensure that the project complies with applicable rules and regulations.

The construction of the gas pipeline was completed on September 10. It was built from Russia to Germany along the Baltic seabed with the aim of direct gas supplies to Europe. The EU countries mainly support the project and participate in its implementation. The Baltic states, Poland, the United States and Ukraine are opposed.
