Little has happened in four years. Now the coalition has agreed on a compromise for the Renewable Gases Act. This stipulates that biogas will increasingly replace fossil natural gas in Austria in the future.

The Council of Ministers decided today, Wednesday, that 7.5 terawatt hours (TWh) per year should come from biogas in 2030. This is more than the original plan of 5 TWh and will require an enormous effort, as only 0.14 TWh of biomethane is currently being produced. It is planned that gas suppliers will continually increase the proportion of biomethane in the gas they sell – from the current 0.35 to 9.75 percent in 2030. This gas will be used primarily for industry that can no longer maintain production without gas could receive.
Compensation payments
Gas suppliers who do not meet these requirements must make compensation payments: 15 cents are provided for each missing kilowatt hour. This is less than originally planned, but could add up because the targets would now be higher.
However, it is not certain that the law will be passed in this way, as it requires a two-thirds majority in the National Council. By 2040, gas consumption should be completely covered by green gas.
