Mother Language Day has its origins in the 1950s: In 1952, the government of Pakistan decided to make Urdu the official language – but it was only the mother tongue for around 3 percent of the population. In East Pakistan almost only Bengali was spoken. On February 21, 1952, there were protests during which the police shot at demonstrators and there were fatalities. The conflict subsequently led to the division of the country – the state of Bangladesh was founded in 1971. Since 1999, the General Conference of UNESCO has dedicated February 21st to the mother tongue.
