There was great horror after a 60-year-old jogger lost her life in a dog attack on October 2, 2023 in the Mühlviertel municipality of Naarn in Marchfelde (Perg district). As it became known at the time, the woman suffered such severe bite injuries from at least one American Staffordshire terrier that she died on the spot.

There was a lot of speculation after the cruel incident, especially whether only one of the American Staffordshire terriers “Elmo” had bitten the 60-year-old, or whether two other dogs present were also involved. “Elmo” was euthanized shortly after the events. The other two animals were handed over to an animal shelter and a private individual.
As Ulrike Breiteneder from the Linz public prosecutor’s office announced in response to OÖN’s request, after months of investigation, a criminal complaint has now been filed against the 38-year-old dog owner for grossly negligent homicide. If convicted, she could face up to three years in prison.

“We assume that the owner was overwhelmed with the three dogs and did not have them under control,” says Breiteneder. One of the dogs brought the 38-year-old to the ground before attacking the 60-year-old victim. The three dogs then did not let go of the woman through commands or physical intervention.

According to the public prosecutor’s office, another report has now confirmed that all three dogs had bitten. There was confusion about this until the very end.
The trial will take place on March 7th at the Linz Regional Court.
