The fraudsters’ scam is always the same: They call their – often elderly – victims and introduce themselves as police officers. Then they tell the people they are talking to a lie about robbery or theft in the local area and ask about valuables in the apartment. These would have to be picked up to protect those affected.

The state police department warned about the fraud calls on Tuesday: six of these crimes were reported in the Eferding district. The next day, the perpetrators tried their luck in the greater Linz area and in the Ried im Innkreis district – again in vain. The police were informed of seven failed fraud attempts on Wednesday alone.
“In the specific cases, everyone affected reacted in an exemplary manner, did not allow themselves to be intimidated and did not engage in any further business with the fraudsters,” praises the police and once again advises caution.
This is what the police advise:
- The police never ask for cash or valuables for safekeeping, protection or evidence.
- End suspicious phone calls and dial 133.
- Do not provide any details about family or financial circumstances.
- Don’t let strangers into your apartment.
- Never give money or gold to strangers.
- Talk to your family about these fake police officers. Older generations in particular are affected.
