The mother of Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny filed a lawsuit in Russia to challenge the authorities’ refusal to hand over the body of his son, who died in prison last week. It was presented in a court in the Arctic city of Salekhard.
Citing judicial sources, the Russian news agency Tass indicated that the court that received Lyudmila Navalnaya’s lawsuit called a closed-door hearing for next March 4 in which the parties will be heard.

While the investigation into Navalny’s death continues, Russian authorities have said the cause of his death is still unknown and have refused to hand over his body for two weeks. For her part, Navalny’s widow, Yulia, posted a video accusing Putin of killing her husband and alleged that his refusal to hand over his body was part of a cover-up. “They are cowards and mean hiding their bodyrefusing to give him to his mother and lying miserably,” he said.

Many Russians had seen Navalny like a hope for political change after years of Putin’s government and repression of the opposition. Since the death of the opposition leader, a total of 400 people were arrested in Russia while they tried to pay tribute to him.
