BUSAN. Austria’s women’s team traveled to the Table Tennis World Championships in Busan (South Korea) with high hopes, but their disappointment is all the greater after yesterday’s unfortunate 2:3 defeat in the round of 32 against Thailand. With the early elimination, the team missed the hoped-for qualification for the Olympic Games in Paris.
This is particularly bitter for Liu Jia from Linz, who wanted to experience her seventh Olympic participation in France. “I fought, I wanted to help the team,” said the 42-year-old, who competed despite illness and lost both of her singles.
Sofia Polcanova won her two matches without losing a set – including the one against her Linz-AG-Froschberg colleague Suthasini Sawettabut 3-0. Karoline Mischek, on the other hand, suffered a defeat against the Thai Jinnipa Sawettabut after a 2-1 lead, which ultimately decided the game.
Austria’s men’s team lost 3-0 to medal hopefuls Japan in the round of 16 and finished ninth. There had previously been a 3-2 win over Hong Kong, which at least gave hope for an Olympic ticket. However, the decision will only be made after the March world rankings are published.
