While the volume of domestic truck traffic has increased by 18 percent since 2015, the increase in transit traffic was almost twice as high at 35 percent, calculates the VCÖ.

The total of almost 41 million loaded truck journeys in Austria last year are not even matched by 143,000 technical roadside inspections. The traffic club is calling for a significant increase in truck inspections.
“Checks are important for road safety”
“The inspection density is low at 0.4 percent. The results show how important truck inspections are for traffic safety. More than 13,700 trucks had such serious defects that they were no longer allowed to continue driving,” emphasized VCÖ expert Katharina Jaschinsky . In addition, overloading was found in over 30,000 trucks and more than 80,000 violations of driving and rest times were registered.
And she points out: “Although Austria exceeds the EU requirements when it comes to controls, these are based on the number of trucks registered in the country, which is of little relevance in the transit country Austria. Vehicles already account for two thirds of the volume of road freight transport in Austria from abroad.”
Trucks travel an average of eight km/h too fast
Jaschinsky points to Switzerland with stricter controls – including speed limits. Austria is more generous with its tolerances here. Instead of the permitted 80 km/h, trucks would drive an average of 88 km/h on domestic motorways.
