After unsuccessful attempts to stop and escape over the Paulitschsattel to Austria, officials from the neighboring country informed the local police; here the chase continued until the accident with the garden fence. Five Syrians applied for asylum and the smuggler was caught.

But first the 27-year-old Romanian stepped on the accelerator when he was stopped by a police patrol in Bad Eisenkappel (Völkermarkt district). He sped away with the full car at far too much speed, broke through a roadblock a short time later and finally crashed into the garden fence in question. All six occupants – no one was injured – fled the scene of the accident. Five dragged Syrians, two men, two women and a 13-year-old child, were found in an adjacent forest. The 27-year-old smuggler, a Romanian, was discovered hours later by a police patrol in Grafenstein (Klagenfurt-Land district) during a driver check in a taxi and was temporarily arrested.
