In the future, the police in Lower Austria will be using new software to monitor driving and rest times in heavy traffic. Officials can use this to detect manipulations and changes to the digital control device as they drive past, it was said on Thursday. Violations should be recognized and punished quickly and without delay.
Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) handed over 63 laptops equipped with the new evaluation software to the Lower Austria State Transport Department (LVA) on Thursday. The general goal is to avoid accidents caused by driver fatigue and thus increase road safety.
“Lower Austria has an extensive, high-level road network that carries a large part of Austria’s heavy traffic. This represents a major challenge for the Lower Austria regional transport department,” emphasized Karner in a press release. “The evaluation software is an important tool to be able to meet this challenge even better.” According to State Police Director Franz Popp, the new software enables more efficient work: “This saves resources that can be used in other areas.”
More than 25,700 heavy vehicle checks were carried out in Lower Austria in 2023, and there were over 83,000 nationwide. A total of more than 224,000 violations were detected and punished in Austria. These included, among other things, technical vehicle defects, disregard for driving and rest times and deficiencies in securing loads.
