As reported, the mayor of Wels, Andreas Rabl (FP), is running for the board of the “Austrian Friends of Yad Vashem” association together with his Linz counterpart Klaus Luger (SP). This maintains Austria’s relations with the Israeli state memorial for the Holocaust in Jerusalem. The politicians justified their decision to run jointly and the club would have been threatened with dissolution following the complete resignation of the previous board.

After Oskar Deutsch, President of the Jewish Community of Vienna, had already criticized the FP politician’s candidacy, the Mauthausen Committee Austria (MKÖ) has now joined in: Rabl is mocking Holocaust victims, according to a statement from the MKÖ chairman Willi Mernyi. “Rabl not only never distanced himself from the countless right-wing extremist and anti-Semitic ‘individual cases’ of his party, but he also took care of some of them himself.”

Mernyi accuses Rabl of having subsidized and hosted a meeting of right-wing extremist fraternities in Wels last year – the OÖN reported. He also blames the mayor for not renaming “Franz-Resl-Straße,” named after the Nazi poet. In fact, a corresponding application was rejected in the local council in the autumn of the previous year with votes from VP and FP.

Mernyi also criticizes the other politicians who are running together with Rabl: “You don’t give in as a whitewasher.” Green National Council member Ralph Schallmeiner also spoke of an “attempt to whitewash” himself and described Rabl’s candidacy as “pure chutzpah.”
