Births in Italy hit a 160-year low and continue to decline

There were 404,892 births in 2020, the ISTAT statistics office said, 15,192 fewer than the previous year. Some 746,146 people died in 2020 when the population fell to 59.3 million people.

The decline continues this year, provisional data from January to September show, with 12,500 fewer births than in the same period in 2020. ISTAT said that the Covid-19 epidemic appeared to be a major factor in the decline.

The average number of children per woman residing in Italy fell to 1.24 in 2020. The rate was even lower for Italian women, reaching 1.17, one of the lowest proportions in the world.

The average age at which Italian women had their first child rose to a record 32.7 years in 2020, while 35.8% of births took place outside of marriage. In 2008, the figure was only 19.6%, suggesting a sharp decline in the influence of the Catholic Church.

Italy is the third largest economy in the Eurozone, a region where several governments face the challenge of an aging population.
