Researchers have identified a protein whose increased presence plays a key role in diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This results in a potential treatment with drugs that reduce this protein, explained the UZH in the specialist magazine “Nature”.
In neurodegenerative diseases, some of the nerve cells in the brain die. In the disease known as the “Ice Bucket Challenge,” ALS affects the cerebral cortex and spinal cord, causing paralysis.
