The Chamber of Labor district office in Ried recently looked back on a busy year in 2023. A large part of the concerns of the almost 26,000 AK members in the Ried district were able to be dealt with through consultations, but the lawyers also had to use some legal levers to help the employees achieve their claims.
AK Ried was able to conclude 158 labor law cases last year. The legal representatives had to go to court 24 times. In total, almost 380,000 euros were won in court.
In addition, 105 social law cases were also concluded. These are largely pension and care allowance matters, for which a total of almost 4.1 million euros were won for the members. In addition, the AK district office secured around 500,000 euros for more than 60 employees from 15 insolvent companies in the Ried district. In total, more than five million euros were won for the members in the Ried district, who thus got their due. For this reason, we deliberately focus on being close to home in order to offer members the opportunity to get advice and help directly in the region, according to the AK.
Help for leasing workers
For example, a temporary worker from the Ried district needed special help. He worked for a metal processing company. After an accident at work, the worker was on sick leave for just over two weeks. The leasing company then explained to the employee via WhatsApp that the employing company “no longer needs him”.
She deregistered him from the Austrian Health Insurance Fund on the day of the accident.
The worker turned to the AK, which then intervened with the leasing company and insisted on an ongoing employment relationship because the employee had not agreed to any termination. The leasing company then “properly” terminated the employee while he was on sick leave and continued to pay the due wages beyond the termination date because the worker’s sick leave lasted even longer. The employee thus received all outstanding claims from the previous months, such as overtime or bonuses, the statutory termination claims and continued payment of wages – a total of more than 12,300 euros gross.
Choice of interest group
In addition to looking back on the past year, the AK is also focusing on the future. The Chamber of Labor elections will take place in Upper Austria from March 5th to 18th. Around 570,000 eligible voters have the opportunity to elect their “parliament” – the AK General Assembly.
The general assembly is the highest body of the Chamber of Labor and consists of 110 chamber councilors in Upper Austria. They decide on the basic principles for interest policy, the budget and how it is used for the members.
